Am so excited for you both. Reading your article in the Times brings back my trip from Morocco to Cape Town and up to Egypt which was ages ago. You have obviously done your homework well and have bought the best and right parts for your car and kitted it out well. My website has some top tips, but I doubt you’ll need them. It also has commentary on the countries you’ll be visiting although in the reverse order and probably very out of date now. The best things you can take are a smile, an open mind and don’t be in a hurry. Other advice – do not drive in the dark. Bon voyage – Jacqui

You will have booked on the ferry from Aswan. Good idea is to get your fixer to reserve a good place for you which, in our case a year ago, was next to the captain’s bridge. About 13 hrs after you leave, around 6am, you will pass Abu Simbel on starboard side….not to be missed. We followed a very similar route. Very few road signs in Sudan so a compass and recent map are vital as quite a few brand new roads. Good luck!

    • That’s a great tip – thank you David. I’ve always wanted to see Abu Simbel. We have a compass and have downloaded Tracks4Africa, so we’re hoping the maps will be up-to-date but at least we’re belts and braces with the compass. Claire
